CCpur Women Collective urges DC Churachandpur to stop price rise of essential items

Updated : July 31, 2020 at 2:49 pm

WOMEN COLLECTIVE AGAINST PRICE RISE

C/O Churachandpur Joint Women Organizations (CJWO) Lamka, Near Synod Building, M/S R Lalkhumi Building Churachandpur- 795 128, Manipur

Dated 28th July 2020

To,

The Deputy Commissioner, Churachandpur
Manipur

Subject: Price rise of essential commodities during Covid 19 pandemic lockdown in Churachandpurdistrict ; For necessary intervention and action.

Sir,

We, the women collective of Churachandpur would like to bring to your kind notice that, the prices of essential commodities have suddenly skyrocketed as soon as total lockdown was announced by the government of Manipur.

Rise of prices of essential commodities and hoarding of food items has become a “practice” whenever there is lockdown, blockade or bandh in Churachandpur. Immediately after announcement of lockdown or curfew, essential items were not available in shops and retail outlets. We also learnt that Lamka based businessmen, the suppliers and retailers, who are mostly non-locals, would stock-up food grains and refused to give out for sale. But after a couple of days, this stock will be sold at higher, exorbitant price to the consumers.

On the basis of random survey of price variances in different shops in and around Lamka town bazaars, here are some of the cases for your reference

  1. Potato price rises from Rs 30 to Rs 50 per kg
  2. Rice price rises from Rs 1000 to Rs 1200 per bag (25 kgs)

This is grave injustice for the people of Churachandpur, as there is no disruption in food supply chain.

In view of these situation, and consideringthe plight of large number of women and poor families, We, the Women Collective of Churachandpur district is deeply concern and we strongly felt the need to bring this to your notice and intervention.

We urge you as The District Administration, to look into this matter and ensure that such practice should be stop for the good of all and maintain mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence.

Let us all join hands in fighting COVID-19 and not fighting each other – between shop owners and the consumers.

Thank you for your cooperation

On behalf of all the Women & Mothers of Churachandpur district who are directly impacted by the price rise,
