Zomi Student’ Federation
August 8, 2018
The Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) is deeply alarmed that Manipur University (MU) has come to a grinding halt at least for the past 70 days due to a tug of war between the Vice Chancellor of MU on the one side and Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUSA) and Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA) on the other side. The closure and non-functioning of MU has cost the students dearly which is irreversible and irreparable loss for the entire State. To resolve the impasse engulfing MU. the Union Government has constituted a Fact Finding Committee to investigate the charges levelled against the VC. It is our desire that the Fact Finding Committee should conduct in a free, fair and impartial manner. It is high time to let our reasons prevail over our emotions and allow the law to take its own course. Anyone found guilty should be punished irrespective of his/her position.
For an early and immediate solution to the crisis that plagued MU the All Tribal Students’ Union. Manipur (ATSUM) and its constituent units namely All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and Kuki Students’ Organization, General Headquarters (KSO, GHQ) called a 24 hour shutdown from the wee hour of August 10, 2018 to the late night of August 11, 2018. Their demands, among others, include restoration of normal academic atmosphere in the University of Manipur and bringing an amicable solution between the agitators and the Government of Manipur. It is indeed a very welcome and encouraging step for the restoration of normal academic activities in the Temple of Learning.’ Holding of University to ransom is nothing less than hanging the sword of Damocles on the head of the students.
It is worth to recall that the ZSF has demanded an immediate reopening of MU. restoration of peace and normalcy in and around the campus and depoliticization of learning environment and towards this end it organized a peaceful rally on August 6. 2018. The ZSF while appreciating the shutdown called by the ATSUM and its constituent units, to avoid double jeopardy to the same people for the same noble cause (as the ZSF had already organised a peaceful rally) and considering the hardship faced by the people due to frequent bandh imposed by different organisations, the ZSF will not enforce the total shutdown within its jurisdiction.
